I don't want to assume that someone has Word installed on their machine. What is the best file format so that everyone can read a document file?
The only ones I can think of are:
- Rich Text Format
- Open Document Format
- Portable Document Format
- Plaint Text
For example, what would be the best file format to write a resume in? I've actually written mine in XHTML, but some places simply demand a .doc file.

I'd like to work with a Google spreadsheet directly inside Libreoffice, without having to export and import it, in order to automatically reflect the changes on the online file.

PDFs are a great archive format for scanned images, but Acrobat does not allow you to edit the text layer of the document (the part that can copy and paste from) leaving you with just the raw OCR. Are there any freeware alternatives that let you edit the text layer?

When i open an reg file in notepad++ file in notepad++ , I see the amazing functionality to minimize and maximize the subkeys of a base key by clicking on that little arrow on the left .can I get this functionality in normal documents ? i want to create different categories for ex: topic 1 , topic 2 etc which i can maximize and minimize . Is there a way in Office 2010 Pro, to always open the document as read-only when I open it?
At work we store documents on a shared drive. The problem is, quite often someone may need to edit it, but I have it open because I am viewing it. So they need to ask me to close it, just so they can edit it.

I thought this would be a simple task, but it turned out the other way.
The watermark is the very same (overlapping, but transparent) image on every single page. I created the PDF file myself (so no copyright worries here) using PDFCreator 0.9.8.
I have already tried my friend's Adobe Acrobat Pro, but it didn't work. It tries to remove it, but it can't. I tried to remove header/footer, etc., but the watermark just won't disappear.
How can I remove the watermark?

I work for a small company in the Mechanical Engineering sector. Nobody here knows a thing about coding or databasing except for myself, and I know little more than basic SQL, some C#, some VBA.
I'm trying to find a good open-source/freeware document control solution for all of our engineering-related documentation. Most files are in the format of .docx, .xlsx, .pdf, or .dwg (CAD).
Is Subversion adaptable to my purposes of doc control as opposed to code control? Would it also be sufficient to produce reports of documents in the system with corresponding revision numbers?
Any other recommendations or solutions out there are certainly welcome.

Using Word 2010, I've added a custom property to my document, Something
, and I've set the value to XYZ
. In the document, I hit Ctrl+F9 to insert a reference, and I type { DOCPROPERTY [Something] }
. When I go to print preview, the page is blank, and returning to my document, I find my reference is now gone.
What is the proper way to insert a reference to a document property?

I'm new to Linux and I'm trying to setup a small testing server inside of a VM running Ubuntu Server. I've found the /var/www folder and it should be the one where my Apache documents are stored, in fact if I access my VM's IP I see the index.html page that's stored there.
My problem is that I can't write to that folder.
ls -l
returns:

What's the best thing to do when dealing with this folder to allow myself to edit and create files here? Should I create a new group or set myself as the owner of the folder?

I'm currently working on a developer's manual to go with an application I'm making for work. I wrote a simple script to go through all of my code, and parse all of my comments into a LaTeX document, and then added some additional reference material I wrote. My work term is coming to an end soon, however, and I don't want to leave them stranded with a document they can't change or update in the future.
LaTeX is certainly not standard-issue stuff here, we use mostly Microsoft Office products. My LaTeX document makes extensive use of in-document links to other sections (mainly with the hyperref
package), so I'm trying my best to not have to rewrite the entire document. This is why I would prefer to keep the structure of the document over the appearance (I can change appearance later, I just want to keep all of my crosslinks).
Is there any kind of application which can parse my TeX source, and convert it into an equivalent Microsoft Word document (any version is acceptable)? Obviously, free/open source software would be preferred, but I'm willing to at least consider other paid alternatives. Also, note that I don't have administrative privileges on this machine, so a portable solution would also be preferred.
Again, I'd really like to retain all of the cross-references and links to other document sections. I'd prefer to keep the document structure over it's appearance.
If anyone at any time has another solution (either another alternative, or a better method), please post it as an answer and it will be considered. Thank you.
