I accidentally removed my Downloads folder from the dock.
I dragged it back from Finder but it doesn't work like it used to, it's just an ordinary folder now :(
Any ideas how to restore it to it's original glory?

Windows 7 has a neat feature where the Windows Key in conjunction with the arrow keys tiles the active window. Windows key + left arrow moves it to the left half, windows key + right arrow moves your window to the right half of your monitor.
Is there an equivalent to this functionality in OS X?
Can anyone suggest some alternative metaphors by which to manage my windows? I find that OSX windows tend to be a bit more scatterbrained than their windows counterparts.

I see some apps such as Thunderbird and Firefox add a "force quit" to their dock menus.
where is this menu configuration stored?
if it's not a simple text file change, how can I add this to other applications?
update: Thanks for the hints about pressing alt/option to get the force quit menu item. Note that option-Menu doesn't do this. You have to bring up the context menu by right-clicking or control clicking, and then pressing the alt/option key. You will see the "quit" menu item change to "force quit".

Ever since installing Lotus Notes on my Mac I haven't been able to properly access it from the dock.
If the program is off then it will open up fine the first time but then clicking on the icon will not make Notes jump to the front of the screen.
It is only a minor thing but as it is the only program on my dock that I need to CMD-Tab to access it gets pretty annoying!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Notes version - 8.5.1

I don't want the dock that is at the bottom of the screen. I don't want to hide it but completely remove it. How can this be done? If not possible, why not?

I'm looking for a dock application to use on Ubuntu, but suggestions are welcome for all platforms. I'm familiar with RocketDock, but don't think that it works for Linux. Any ideas?

I am new to Mac. In Windows, we used to open multiple Visual Studio or Eclipse instance and switch to each other by clicking icons on taskbar.
I found this thread shows how to create a customized dock icon to launch multiple Xcode, and then we can get several icons on Dock like taskbar in Windows.
I was wondering in Mac world, is it prefer to open multiple instance of Xcode or just have one Xcode with multiple projects opened. What is the most convenient way to switch back and forth?

command ⌘+tab⇥ and my Exposé shortcuts have stopped working, and clicking/mousing over dock icons has no effect.
What's wrong? What can I do to get things back?

I have recently installed Cygwin on a Windows 7 beta machine. Everything works great, except one little annoyance:
The Cygwin shortcut (Start->All Programs->Cygwin->Cygwin Bash Shell) cannot be pinned to the Start menu. My guess as to why is that I already have a "Console" window pinned to the start menu. My guess is that Windows sees that the two EXEs are the same and won't let me pin it.
This would be fine except I cannot pin the window to the Dock either. While Cygwin is running, WIndows interprets it as just a Command Window and won't let me pin it either.
How do you pin the Cygwin shortcut to the dock?

In Mavericks, Apple introduced a "feature" where if you hover at the bottom of any screen the dock pops up on that screen.
This is disrupting my workflow as I am constantly having the dock pop up when I don't want it to and then I have to go to another window and hover at the bottom for several seconds to get it to go away so I can click on what I was trying to in the first place.
I don't want the dock to move; I want it to stay on the bottom of my right-most monitor like it always has. How can I adjust this in OSX Mavericks?

I know how to Hide (Cmd+H
) or Minimize (Cmd+M
) a focused window in OS X, but I can't find a keyboard shortcut or even a menu item to restore, unhide, unminimize, or otherwise show a window that I've hidden or minimized.
Anyone have a suggestion?

On a MacBook Air running OS X Lion, I have a dock bar at the bottom of the built in screen, how can I move this to my external screen? I've already got the menu bar moved, but the screen system preference control does not appear to also control the dock location.
