On Windows I loved the "Play To" function included in Windows Media Player to push content to my Samsung TV.
But now that I am on Linux I don't know how to do the same thing. I found how to setup a DLNA server and retrieve it's content from the TV but this is not what I'm really looking for..
Any solutions?

I have VLC on my Mac and would like to connect to a DLNA server on my LAN but the server isn't showing up in VLC's UPnP auto-discovery UI. Given the IP address of the server how can I point VLC to it explicitly so it can be 'discovered'?

Can someone tell me the what is the difference between DLNA and UPNP? I can see that some device (such as NASes) specifications mention both (e.g., Iomega StorCenter) or only DLNA (e.g., Netgear Stora).
Are these synonyms for the same thing or are there actually two different protocols? Are they compatible, e.g., if a media server uses DLNA and the streaming device uses UPNP, will it work?

Is there a viable solution that can stream live input from PC games such as Left 4 Dead to the TV, possibly using DLNA?
I've found a lot of streaming hard- and software, but they're all about sharing movies and photos. This thread even concludes it's impossible, which i find incredible as live streaming is the same as streaming from a file given enough bandwidth, and HD video takes a lot of bandwidth.
Streaming a desktop over DLNA is possible via VLC.

Is there any way (hardware or software) to stream the actual Windows desktop to a DLNA TV? I know you can stream certain media files (and this is working fine) but I would need to stream normal Windows applications to a remote TV via the local network.

I'm looking for a UPNP/DLNA Client for Windows.
The server is MediaTomb on a Ubuntu box.
The clients are Windows (any, XP and up).
I'm looking for a simplistic music player program but failed to identify any.
I'm hoping for something in the style of Winamp or Windows Media Player.
I've looked, but so far only been able to achieve playback on Windows with HTPC-ish software like XBMC, and on an android cellphone (several players for that there, all worked fine).
Edit: Just to clarify, I'm not looking for an HTPC Suite (IE XBMC), I'm looking for a regular-looking music player.

I have a Samsung TV that is capable of playing MKV files. The Windows DLNA Play To menu that appears when you right-click a media file does not support MKV files, but a simple trick has been to change the file extension from .mkv to .avi so the Play To context menu item would appear. At that point I could successfully stream from my computer to my TV.
However, this does not appear to work in Windows 8. Doing the same thing in Windows 8 causes the Play To window to open but the file does not get played. Dragging and dropping the file in the Play To window causes it to be silently ignored. Using actual AVI, MP4, etc. files works, of course. It appears Windows 8 is now doing some kind of validation on the file that Windows 7 wasn't previously. The Play To window does not show any kind of obvious error message or warning and there is nothing in the Windows event log.
So, is there a way in Windows 8 to stream MKV files to a DLNA device without converting it to another container format?
I would rather not use extra third-party software, but I would consider it if it's purposefully designed for this simple case rather than a more robust "media library/server" solution.

We're looking to buy some LCD monitors to be used as dashboard displays in the development offices around here at work. Primarily they will display information from a PC directly connected via HDMI or VGA. However, an awesome use case would be where team members can broadcast a live view of their monitor to the TV for the rest of the room to watch (and maybe listen to).
Would it be possible to do this via DLNA with some sort of executable on the broadcasting machine that spoke as a DLNA server to the DLNA client (the TV)?
Does anyone know of anything similar? Should I avoid DLNA completely and just go low-fi and just get staff to use the connected dashboard machine directly with VNC?
I've found this script for linux but because of how many machines and TVs we're talking about I'd prefer to have something that was simply install and go, rather than have to go through the effort of everything that the script would require to become operational on Windows.

On Windows 8, "Play To" functionality has been integrated into Windows Explorer;
However, as you can see, "Play To" is disabled; and I don't know why.
When I hover over the option, I get no information.
If I do things the other way round (set my PC as the streaming server through Windows Media Player, and then search for my PC from the PS3) this works fine; but as I've got many hundreds of videos on my PC, I want to be able to select a video from my laptop, and stream that to my PS3 instead.
I was under the impression that:
- "Play To" works for any DLNA enabled device
- A PS3 is a DLNA enabled device
Sharing is turned ON for this network on my Windows 8 PC, and I've ensured (and proved via the alternate approach above) that the two devices can communicate.
If it's any help, I can't see the PS3 listed as a network device, nor can I see it when I search for devices.

I have a 55" Vizio TV. I noticed in the on screen menus that it could stream content from my PC. I even managed to browse the video files on the PC.
However, my MP4 files won't play on the TV.
What file format are supported, and what tool can convert to these formats (and what settings are needed if any).

I have the DLNA server mediatomb installed on my Mac. What I would like to do now is to capture my Mac's screen and to stream it live through mediatomb.
Is there any software able to do it?

I want to convert a MKV video file containing DTS audio to a stream with AC3 audio. I want to pass this resulting stream to mediatomb's transcoding feature. Mediatomb will transfer the stream via DLNA to a LG TV, which does not support DTS audio.
I have tried the VLC command below but the TV does not recognize the stream, and playing the destination stream on PC does not produce sound.

The following ffmpeg command give a stream that plays on the TV with sound, but the ffmpeg process gets killed (with signal 15) within 10-15 seconds, and then the TV restarts the playback from the beginning. This goes on in loops.

I'm trying to access my Windows 8 laptop via dlna but am receiving an access denied message. I'm using both a Sony network player and BubblesoftUpnp on my android and they can see the laptop (but get the error when accessing).
I've found options within Home Group sharing to allow access but neither the Android device or Sony device can be part of a Home Group (wrong assumption)?
