What is the safest encryption for a Dell Lattitude?

I use a Dell Lattitude with a TPM. There are so many options in the BIOS though for passwords. I can set a System Password, Admin Password and even HDD-0 Password.

I can also use Bitlocker in Windows to encrypt an entire disk.

Which of these methods is the safest?

3 displays with Dell Laptop (2 monitors + laptop display)

I have a Dell Latitude 8420. It is connected to a dock.

Is there any way to have two monitors connected to this setup and also use the laptop screen too? I want the desktop extended on the 3 displays. I am using Windows 7 Professional.

How would things change if I wanted to have 3 external monitors and not use the laptop display?

Will I see performance benefits from an SSD in my laptop?

I have a Dell Latitude D520 1.6ghz, 4gb ram. I'm looking to postpone a laptop upgrade by getting one of the new Intel X25-M G2 SSDs.

Any thoughts or experiences on if such an upgrade will help? I know these things kill in benchmarks but on a laptop, I'm concerned there are other bottlenecks I'd quickly run into (for all I know, this lappy's sata controller--if it has one--can't push bits quickly enough for SSD to matter).

How to move an existing installation of Window 7 64bit to UEFI (from legacy)

I have a laptop that has Windows 7 64 bit Enterprise edition. It is already filled with plenty of Software and drivers.

The laptop (Dell E6220) supports booting through UEFI, but the insatllition was on legacy BIOS.

When I try to change the booting from Legacy to UEFI I get an error message that no boot device was found (the Windows 7 doesn't recognize as bootable). Is there any way I can configure the current install to allow booting from UEFI or do I have to format and reinstall?

How do I turn on Bluetooth on a Dell Latitude E6410?

I have recently acquired a Dell Latitude E6410. It's great, but I can't get Bluetooth to work.

I have enabled Bluetooth for the wireless switch in the BIOS. However, whenever I try and install the Bluetooth driver from the CD I get the message:

Activate Bluetooth using the Wireless Switch.

There is only a cancel button on this dialog. There is no Bluetooth icon on any function key, and I have tried switching the what I assume to be the wireless switch (the switch which controls wireless Internet, on the right side of the laptop) to on and off positions to no avail.

What is the problem?

Enter / Return key stops working

I have a Dell Latitude E5400 laptop running Windows 7.

Everything runs fine on it for days then I suddenly notice the enter/return key is no longer working e.g. I could be writing an email, press enter for a new line but it doesn’t ‘register’ – so no new line. I thought it might be some dirt under the key perhaps so I tried running the Windows onscreen keyboard but the Enter key on that doesn’t work either.

A reboot always fixes the problem but it’s a pain. Any ideas a) how to fix it and b) out of interest, is there some other key combination that I can use as an alternative to using the Enter key when I need to?

UPDATE: Thanks to CarlF's suggestion, I tried exiting running programmes and found it seems to be a problem with PhraseExpress.

Poor Bluetooth audio quality and delays on Dell Latitude with Windows 7

I have been trying to use an LG Tone (HBS700) Bluetooth headset on Windows 7 with mixed results.

The PC is a Dell Latitude E6320, and the Bluetooth adapter is the Dell Wireless 375 Bluetooth module manufactured by Broadcom.

I am able to pair the headset with Windows and everything usually starts out fine. However, after some time (maybe 15 minutes to 2 hours) problems start to arise. The headset will disconnect & reconnect from the PC, and then audio quality turns in to something from a static filled radio. Sometimes the audio quality will be ok, but the audio is delayed by a few seconds.

I can fix the issue by powering the headset on and off; or sometimes, I need to remove the pairing in Windows for it to work properly. Other times, I need to power off the BT radio or reboot the laptop completely.

The headset works fine with any phones I've tried, so I'm confident the problem is with Windows or the laptop hardware.

Why can't I set a resolution of 2560*1600 on my Dell Latitude e6320?

I have:

  • a 30" Apple cinema display, native resolution 2560*1600
  • a Dell Latitude e6320
  • an ePort+ docking station
  • a displayport to dual-link DVI-D adaptor

The display has a dual-link DVI-D lead fused to the case.

The laptop has:

  • intel HD 3000 graphics (known to support this resolution)
  • a built in VGA port (useless)
  • a built in mini-HDMI port (introduced with HDMI 1.3, and therefore capable of driving WQXGA?)
  • Windows 7 32-bit
  • The latest BIOS (A15)
  • The latest graphics drivers from Dell

The docking station has:

  • Two dual-link DVI-D ports
  • Two displayport ports

I've tried both DVI ports and the both displayport ports with the adaptor and the best Windows will offer is 1280*800.

Hitting "list all modes" under graphics properties shows up to 1920*1080, but selecting it turns the display black until windows reverts to 1280*800.

The Intel graphics and media control panel has a custom resolution pane that lets you type in whatever you want. Inputting 2560*1600 gets you a "the custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity" unless you dial it down to 30Hz... which just gives a black display again.

Current theories are that despite offering Dual Link DVI ports the docking station doesn't actually wire them up as such... is that a thing that happens? The same would also go for the displayport-DVI dongle I have, mind, which seems improbable.

One avenue is looking for a mini-HDMI to DVI-D adaptor, though a brief search suggests these are rare and expensive.

On paper this should just work ;_;

Docking station sound doesn't work on Dell D830 with Windows 7

EDIT: I can only mark one answer as the correct one but the actual solution was a combination of two comments (updating the BIOS to A15 AND installing the Sigmatel audio drivers).

I have a Dell Latitude D830 laptop that is running Windows 7 Enterprise x64. I connect to a docking station during the day with multiple monitors, a keyboard and a mouse. Everything runs with no problems including most of the docking station ports (usb, monitors, etc.) However, the sound port from the docking station does not work since the upgrade to Windows-7. Even with the laptop plugged in, the sound always comes out of the laptop, not the headphones plugged into the docking station.

Here's what I've tried:

I've seen other issues like via Google this that seem to be mostly unanswered. I found one or two that referenced using the Vista x64 drivers, especially the Nvidia drivers.

I do not have an Nvidia chipset but I've reinstalled the sound drivers and that has not helped.

I don't have a support contract and considering the cost is usually high to call Dell, that's not an option.

Dell's forums are pretty much a wasteland and I've found no help there.

Since this is a docking station I thought I might need to try the SATA or Intel chipset drivers from the dell site instead, however I'm not really sure and I need to work on this laptop in the meantime. I can't really afford the downtime to experiment with random drivers all day in case they turn out to be incompatible (Dell still hasn't added Windows 7 to their support site as far as I can tell).

Does anyone have any other ideas? Has anyone had this issue and solved it? If so, how? Thanks in advance for your help.

Wireless connection file-share becomes one-way

We have two laptops - a Dell Latitude e5520 and a Dell Latitude e6520. In both cases they are able to connect to the wireless router without incident.

Here's my problem:

When I try to access the laptops' file-share from my workstation, sometimes I can access and sometimes the device cannot be detected on the network. Every time this happens I can still access the workstation's file-share from the laptop. So the access is one-way.

When the laptop starts up, connection works both ways. After awhile it becomes one-way (laptop to workstation only). I can get the connection correct again by disabling and enabling the adapter.

From my workstation, I can see the laptop inside of Network in Windows Explorer; but if I try to connect to it it says Windows cannot access \\mylaptop. So it is findable but not accessible.

If I plug in the ethernet cable then I have no problems, so the issue has to do with wireless.

  • I've gone into the power settings for the adapter and told windows not to power off the adapter in order to save power; but this does not solve the situation.
  • It's not a matter of signal strength either, because the wireless router is only one foot away...
  • The connection seems to last anywhere between 10 to 20 minutes. The laptop is not sleeping.
  • It can't be a matter of a loose chip connection because if I disconnect and reconnect to the wireless signal it always works.
  • It never loses the internet connection
  • It never loses the ability to browse shares on workstations on the network
  • I've updated the driver for the wireless adapter.
  • In the IPv4 settings for the adapter, I have Enable LMHOSTS lookup enabled for WINS, and the NetBIOS setting is set to Default.
  • I cannot ping the laptop from the workstation, but I can ping the workstation from the laptop - even with the firewall off, and even by ipaddress instead of computer-name. Destination Host unreachable

Here is the ipconfig /all from the laptop; it looks the same both before and after it loses it's fileshare connection (the ipconfig of the desktop basically looks the same except for the addresses and the adapter):

Is there something else I can try?

[update]

So I hooked up WinMTR on my desktop to ping the laptop continually, and the laptop's fileshare seems to stay connected, even for hours and hours, whereas without the constant pinging it semi-disconnects after less than a minute. As long as the laptop is being continually pinged, it stays fully connected. But if I stop WinMTR for a few minutes, then it loses the connected and I can't ping it anymore (although it can ping other machines).

However, if I join the laptop with TeamViewer, something jives and the fileshare and the pings start working.

Dell Latitude D830 laptop - disable touchpad

The touch pad is a real pain because it seems to pickup my hand as I'm typing. I never use it the touchpad, I prefer using the the finger pointer on the keyboard between letters G-H-B.

Is there a way to disable the touchpad?

I guess I don't understand exactly what I should be downloading from the dell site? I have a Dell D830 running XP. I searched for TouchPad Applications but I get a list of different programs and drivers drivers. Is there not some easier way to just disable my TouchPad gone rogue?

Why I Was Supplied With Power Supply Less Than Recommended?

Yesterday I was studying the BIOS of a DELL Latitude E6420 laptop and enabled notifications that check and warn if the power supply is not appropriate for laptop.

enter image description here

Immediately I got this message:

enter image description here

The power supply is authentic DELL's power supply but 65W which is less than recommended as BIOS tells me. How will this impact my system and performance? Is this critical and i need to consider buying 90W power supply or i can live with that?

Intel Turbo Boost boosts up to 2.85Ghz which is less than maximum of 3.2GHz processor can handle. Can it be because of a less powerful power supply?
