I'm unable to find 32-bit drivers for Windows 7 for newly purchased Dell Inspiron n5010. It came with FreeDOS so no drivers CD was included. The Dell support site has only drivers for 64-bit Windows Vista and Windows 7.
I need drivers for Windows 7 32-bit.

My inspiron 1720 originally came with Vista, but I installed windows xp on it anyway.
It was a bit of a pain to get xp to work because of driver issues etc.
Do you guys forsee any issues if I install windows 7 on it? i.e. will I have to go out and search for drivers or should it just work automatically :)

I bought a Dell laptop and it came pre-installed with Windows 7 (64-bit). The list of software available on the laptop given by the manufacturer says it has Microsoft Office 2010 OEM installation.
However when I try to use it only the Starter version is available, and for the full version it is asking for an activation key which Dell has not provided. So does this OEM installation mean only a Starter edition? Does anybody know about this?

I was wondering whether I can reuse Dell Media Direct switch for some other purpose like "hibernate" or "open default media player". I have noticed that on Ubuntu, it open default media player.
EDIT: Is there any option to customize it without running Dell's Dell Quick Set as suggested.

I have a new Dell Inspiron 15 7547 laptop here. It makes an annoying high-pitched buzzing sound whenever on AC power.
This is not HDD noise (there's a separate, usual sounding HDD noise when the HDD is working). It's not fan noise (that's also present and it's different and quieter). It's not from the speakers (doesn't respond to volume control).
The buzzing noise is correlated with CPU usage: low CPU usage = loud noise; high CPU usage = no noise. For example, continuously scrolling in the browser will shut it up.
I know that electronic components can make a noise, and I believe this is that.
Question: Is there anything I can do to shut it up?
The buzz is just as loud as the HDD noise but it never stops and it gets really annoying.

I have a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 with only Ubuntu installed. I want to install Windows XP also, but I don't have and can't get an external CD drive, so I need to make a Windows installation from the USB.
All the tutorials I found use Windows to make the USB bootable. How can I make the same from Linux?

Hibernate doesn't work in Windows 7 64bit. When I try to hibernate, it just turns off computer and when I turn on it, it doesn't resume and it just starts as 'fresh' again. I updated my drivers. What is the problem? Can you give me a hand?

Edit, by the way, my model is: Inspiron N5010. After I hibernate and turn on my computer, it just show Shut down didn't shut down correctly.

The update fixed my orange screen on BitLocker boot screen.
Beware: Updating took a few restarts and about 2-3 hours.
Original Problem
Orange Screen (See picture below) appears on boot after Dell loading screen.
- Dell Inspiron 580 w dual monitors
- Dell Bios is latest version (A07)
- Nvidia GeForce 310 (Driver version 341.95 - latest)
- BitLocker enabled with no TPM
- Hyper-V enabled
Surprisingly, I can key in my BitLocker password at this orange screen and startup Windows... (O_o)\
If I suspend BitLocker this screen does not appear; but after I enabled it, the orange screen comes back again.
I found these messages in Event Log, maybe they will be helpful:
(Warning) The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device ROOT\WPD\0000.
(Error) The required GPU resources could not be accessed. This server cannot run as a RemoteFX host without a GPU. Verify that the GPU is correctly installed.

I'm attempting to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview on a Dell Inspiron 8600, and I am getting a 0xc0000260 error.
Googling around, I found that others get this error when installing on a Virtual Machine without the PAE/NX checkbox enabled. I'm pretty sure my processor doesn't support either one of those. (It is a Pentium M "Banias" 1.6.)
Other notes:
- I'm trying to install the 32-bit version.
- I meet the formal system requirements (1 GHz, 2 GB, 16 GB).
- I've attempted to install from within Windows 7 as well as booting from a USB installer.
Am I missing some other, undocumented hardware requirement (e.g. PAE)? Is there another install method I should try?

I've just got a new Dell Inspiron, and I'm a little disconcerted without the reassurance of a flashing hard drive light, especially with long installs. Is there something that can reveal HDD activity onscreen, e.g. in the system tray?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop, about 18 months old.
The problem is that the power cable keeps on falling out.
It's just sitting on a desk, but minor movement can cause it to come out.
From a browse on the internet, it seems to be a reasonably common problem with Dell laptops, but there didn't seem to be any decent solutions.
Any ideas for how to fix it properly, or a "workaround"?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, and the hard drive is failing and I'd like to get a new one.
What I'm wondering is, do I need to buy a hard drive specific to my computer model, or are laptop harddrives usually fairly generic? (If that's the case then I can shop around for the best value.)

Specifically, I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1525. I'd like to disable the touchpad so that I can re-enable if my mouse were to run out of batteries (so physically breaking the connection to the motherboard or uninstalling the driver will not be the best options). In the Control Panel, when I go to "Mouse" and find the touch pad, there is no disable option. Any ideas?
Edit: I am on Windows 7. There is a driver on the Dell site that might allow an option to disable it, but I cannot install it on Windows 7.

I own a Dell Inspiron N5050 Notebook running Windows 7 Home Premium. I am trying to permanently disable the touchpad. I installed the appropriate driver in order to manage my touchpad preferences, and successfully disabled it - but once the machine was rebooted, the touchpad was on again. I really don't care if I will need to keep disabling it each time I boot up, but does anyone know of a way to permanently disable it?
