I have a program which needs to behave slightly differently on Tiger than on Leopard. Does anybody know of a system call which will allow me to accurately determine which version of Mac OS X I am running. I have found a number of macro definitions to determine the OS of the build machine, but nothing really good to determine the OS of the running machine.

I'm writing a program (for Mac OS X, using Objective-C) and I need to create a bunch of .webloc files programmatically.
The .webloc file is simply file which is created after you drag-n-drop an URL from Safari's location bar to some folder.
Generally speaking, I need an approach to create items in a filesystem which point to some location in the Web. As I understand .webloc files should be used for this on Mac OS X.
So, is it possible to craft a .webloc file having a valid url and some title for it?

During the execution of my program I'm getting the following output in the XCode debugging console:

I have no idea where in the application this NULL-context is being passed to the OS. Anyone know of a good technique to hunt it down? Can I break into the application when something is written to stdout

The Gestalt() function located in CarbonCore/OSUtils.h
has been deprecated as of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
I often use this function to test the version of the OS X operating system at runtime (see the toy example below).
What other API could be used to check the OS X operating system version at runtime in a Cocoa application?

I am really hoping someone can help me as I have spent at-least 15 hours trying to fix this problem. I have been given a task by a potential employer and my solution is to use graphite/carbon/collectd. I am trying to run and install carbon / graphite 0.9.12 but I simply can't get carbon to start. Every time I try and start carbon I end up with the following error. I am using a bash script to install to keep everything consistent.
I don't really know python at all so would appreciate any help you can provide.

I'm trying to get a list of all users and all groups on Mac OS X 10.5+. How can I do this?
For example, the list of all users on my machine should return:

TALlama's answer prompted me to investigate the API to Open Directory, and I found that this list can be easily acquired programmatically:

That will log the usernames of every user on the system. Substituting in kODRecordTypeGroups
will get you the list of all the groups.
The -[ODQuery resultsAllowingPartial:error:]
method is a blocking call, so you'd either want to execute this code on a background thread, or use an <ODQueryDelegate>
to aggregate the results.

Is there a way to register for global mouse moved events in Cocoa? I was able to register for the events using Carbon's InstallEventHandler()
, but would prefer a Cocoa equivalent. I have looked for NSNotificationCenter
events, but there doesn't seem to be any public event names (are there private ones?)
Alternatively, is there a way to use NSTrackingArea
for views with a clearColor
background?

Mac OS X stores some files with resource forks. I need to create a file with a resource fork. The trouble is, I need to create this file on the command line. Is anyone aware of how you can create a file with a resource form on the command line in Mac OS X?

So here's what is going on.
I am attempting to work with Core Audio, specifically input devices. I want to mute, change volume, etc, etc. I've encountered something absolutely bizarre that I cannot figure out. Thus far, google has been of no help.
When I query the system and ask for a list of all audio devices, I am returned an array of device IDs. In this case, 261, 259, 263, 257.
Using kAudioDevicePropertyDeviceName, I get the following:

The problem crops up when I then query the system and ask it for the ID of the default input device. This method returns an ID of 269, which is not listed in the array of all devices.
If I attempt to use kAudioDevicePropertyDeviceName to get the name of the device, I am returned an empty string. Although it doesn't appear to have a name, if I mute this device ID, my built-in microphone will mute. Conversely, if I mute the 261 ID, which is named "Built-In Microphone", my microphone does not mute.

To further confuse things, if I manually switch my input to "Line In" and re-run the program, I get an ID of 259 when querying for the default input device, which is listed in the array of all devices.
So, to summarize:
I am attempting to interact with the input devices in my system. If I try to interact with device ID 261 which is my "Built-In Microphone", nothing happens. If I try to interact with device ID 269 which is, apparently, a phantom ID, my built-in microphone is affected. The 269 ID is returned when I query the system for the default input device, but it is not listed when I query the system for a list of all devices.
Does anyone know what is happening? Am I simply going insane?

It appears after much searching that there seems to be a common problem when trying to do a file copy and show a progress indicator relative to the amount of the file that has been copied. After spending some considerable time trying to resolve this issue, I find myself at the mercy of the StackOverflow Gods once again :-) - Hopefully one day I'll be among those that can help out the rookies too!
I am trying to get a progress bar to show the status of a copy process and once the copy process has finished, call a Cocoa method. The challenge - I need to make use of File Manager Carbon calls because NSFileManager does not give me the full ability I need.
I started out by trying to utilize the code on Matt Long's site Cocoa Is My Girlfriend. The code got me some good distance. I managed to get the file copy progress working. The bar updates and (with some additional searching within Apple docs) I found out how to tell if the file copy process has finished...

However, I have one last hurdle that is a little larger than my leap right now. I don't know how to pass an object reference into the callback and I don't know how to call a Cocoa method from the callback once finished. This is a limit of my Carbon -> Cocoa -> Carbon understanding. One of the comments on the blog said
"Instead of accessing the progress indicator via a static pointer, you can just use the void *info field of the FSFileOperationClientContext struct, and passing either the AppDelegate or the progress indicator itself."
Sounds like a great idea. Not sure how to do this. For the sake of everyone else that appears to bump into this issue and is coming from a non-Carbon background, based mostly upon the code from Matt's example, here is some simplified code as an example of the problem...

I'm using some Carbon code in my Cocoa project for handling global key events (shortcuts) from other applications. Currently I have setup a kEventHotKeyReleased
event handler and I can successfully obtain hot keys when my application is not active. That triggers some operation in my application.
The problem I have with the behavior of kEventHotKeyReleased
is:
Say for example I press the Cmd-Shift-P key combination. As soon as I release the "P" key the hot key event is triggered. I need to be able to trigger the event (or manually trigger it) when all of the keys are unpressed (i.e: the Cmd and Shift keys are released too).
It is easy to monitor for hot keys but I have seen nothing for monitoring individual keystrokes. If I could monitor the modifier key states I would be in business.
Any hints on how to do this?

I've tried using kEventRawKeyUp
and kEventRawKeyModifiersChanged
but while kEventHotKeyReleased
works those two don't even though I set them up in the exact same way as kEventHotKeyReleased
.

Ok forget that, I overlooked the line in the doc that said to use CGEventMaskBit(kCGEventKeyUp) for this parameter, so the correct call is:

To intercept modifier keys, use kCGEventFlagsChanged

I'm integrating a GTK# application into Mac OS X. GTK on Mac OS X is a wrapper over some Cocoa and Carbon fundamentals. We have some platform-specific stuff directly using Carbon global menu APIs (it's more low-level and flexible than Cocoa, and we don't need to be 64-bit).
It seems that GTK swallows up all the keyboard events before Carbon dispatches them as commands. This makes sense, because there is no mapping of Carbon commands into the GTK world. In general, this isn't a problem, because we have a global key event handler and dispatch everything via our own command system. However, this seems to be preventing Cmd-? from opening the Help search menu, and I cannot find a way to do this programmatically.
Menu Manager's MenuSelect function is promising, but I haven't figured out a way to determine the coordinate automatically, and for some reason it only works when I hit the combination twice...
Alternatively, a way to dispatch the Cmd-? keystroke to Carbon's command handling or synthesize the command event directly would be good, but I haven't had any luck in that area.
Carbon's ProcessHICommand isn't any use without a command ID and I can't figure out what it is (if there is one)
Regarding Cocoa, I can get hold of the NSWindow and call InterpretKeyEvents, but I haven't had any luck success synthesizing the NSEvent - it just beeps. The event I'm using is

I am trying to find process type (32 bit/ 64bit) from process pid?
I get the process information and process list from using GetBSDProcessList method described here.
how can we get the process type information? Any Ideas?
I can use defined(i386) or defined(x86_64) but only if we are in process. I am out of the process.
