Alternatives to LibraryThing [closed]

I use LibraryThing for a long time but the interface is very unintuitive and "oldschool". Are there some better alternatives out there?

I want:

  • Nice looking GUI
  • Good API to include recent books on my blog
  • Possibility to add own book covers and import books from other sites like Amazon.
  • Import/Export option

How to resurrect one's Amazon Reading List data in Shelfari?

As some of you may know, Amazon Reading List was a LinkedIn app that disappeared from LinkedIn recently (early 2013, I think).

(The app page still exists, but if you try to "add" the application, you get an error:
You have reached the limit of applications on your homepage and your profile. Please remove an application from both pages before adding another application.)

I kinda liked the app, and had dozens of books listed in it as "read" or "want to read". I had put a little effort in writing some reviews, too.

Now, at a Stack Overflow question I just saw this interesting comment:

The previous Reading List data can now be resurrected at Amazon's shelfari.com

I registered to Shelfari (using existing Amazon account), which seems pretty nice and usable. I was looking for an option to find/import my old Amazon Reading List data, but couldn't find it. Anyone know how to do this, if it's indeed possible?

Is there a web app that gives single book recommendations? [closed]

I've been searching for a website that basically does something very similar to the following flow chart (link if it's too small to see): Flow Chart of Awesomness

I'm basically looking for a site that asks simple questions like the flowchart does and gives a single book recommendation.

I found www.whatshouldireadnext.com but that basically gives a list of recommendations based off of Amazon's "Costomers who bought this also bought..." database (I'm assuming)

Does anyone know of anything like this? Am I SOL?

Is there a site which gives one-page "Cliff Notes" of current business books? [closed]

I have time to read about one current "business trends" book per month.

Is there a site that I can go where I can read a review summarizing the kernel ideas of the top ten "business trend" books for that month?

Emulating flipping pages of a paper book [closed]

I want to create an animation that flips through pages and content like a real world paper book.

Is there some kind of web application that lets you enter content (e.g. poems) and generates an animation that digitally simulates turning pages?

How can I download a Picaboo photobook?

I created a photobook in Picaboo: is there any way to download it (e.g. as a PDF)?

Are there any web apps that can keep track of collections of books or movies? [closed]

Are there any webapps that can keep track of collections? I have a large library of books and DVDs and I would like some way to keep track of what I have and what I have loaned out to friends. Does anyone know of a web app that could help me?

How can I publish a book in pieces while I'm still writing it? [closed]

I have started writing a technical book. I wish to publish it as a work-in-progress.

  1. I want new visitors to see the current contents, probably starting at a TOC.
  2. I want return visitors to see what I've changed since their previous visit, also probably a TOC but sections marked with revision date.
  3. I want everyone to be able to make comments.
  4. I want some way of dealing with spam that doesn't take up too much of my time.
  5. I want to distinguish minor edits from additions and major revisions.

I think that doing this as a blog wouldn't work well because visitors couldn't easily see the table of contents or otherwise see the context of a new addition.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

Edit: I'm not looking for a collaboration tool where multiple people write something together. I'm looking for a tool where only I write and publish, and anyone else can make comments, which are also visible to everyone.

I'm trying to do a first draft in MediaWiki, marking all the main pages as protected and leaving all the discussion pages as unprotected. I think this will fail on points 2 and 4.

Using markdown for large complex documents [closed]

I am trying to find an easy way to manage/edit a set of standard operating procedures that's around 400+ pages between 4 word documents. I would like to move it to the web.

I have used markdown on this site and other sites to easily make short "documents". These tend to be short in nature, on the order of a page or two.

I've been thinking about going with markdown but I'm unsure of how to manage and organize the large number of chapters and sections it has. I haven't found many articles regarding markdown and large, complex documents. Is markdown a suitable solution?

Is there a limit to the length of the document in markdown? And are there any web services that host markdown to make large complex documents.

I know about Google Docs, and Microsoft Live, but I am more interested in the ease of web formatting in markdown.

Looking for social media collector apps [closed]

I am looking for an application where I can save online the information of media products that I own:

  • Music: Album, MP3, etc.
  • Movies: DVD, Blu Ray, etc.
  • Books
  • Videogames

and to have the possibility to share my lists with friends, apply votes, write and read reviews, etc.

I know there are some webapps available for Movies only, or Books only (Shelfari, etc.).

I am wondering if there is "one to rule them all".

How do I print pages from a book I own on Google play?

I own a book on Google Play that I just recently purchased. I can read it via Google Play on both my browser and my smartphone. However, I want to print the certain pages from the book as how they appear on Google Play's Chrome browser. Using a Ctrl+P command generates a window with the text, "Preview cannot be displayed", meaning I cannot select certain page numbers that I wish to print. I know that it's not my printer malfunctioning because I can print documents on other websites accessed through Chrome, such as news articles.

Is there any way to print via Google Play?

Most useful public recommendation engine [closed]

By recommendation engine, I mean a web app where you tell it your favourite things, and it recommends other things that you might like, based on a corpus of data.

Apparently Netflix does this for movies (I don't know, I live outside the US).

I've used these in the past for:

  • movies
  • books
  • games
  • music
  • etc

...but it looks like they've all since disappeared (kindakarma, wikilens, a few others I think).

Can you save me (and future generations arriving here by google!) some hours of searching and recommend any good recommendation engine web apps?

Particularly looking for video games, but any will do.

Does Amazon change previewable pages of a book according to some factors?

I am reading the preview pages of a book on Amazon (www.amazon.com/Elements-Programming-Interviews-Questions-Solutions/dp/1479274836/ ).

There are many clickable (i.e. with links to the main text) chapter and section titles in the table of content, but when I read a fewer number of pages, I can't access any more pages, and the chapter and section titles in the table of content become non-clickable. E.g. Section 18.12 in the table of content was clickable before (see http://i.imgur.com/fwjLKzM.png), but not after (see http://i.imgur.com/XNmCscf.png), and the majority of the books becomes not previewable (see http://i.imgur.com/PvNWAOz.png).

  1. Do different IPs have different sets of previewable pages of a book?

  2. Are the previewable pages of a book different for different Amazon accounts?

  3. Does Amazon change the previewable pages of a book over time? E.g., If I wait for a week, a month, or some length of time, will the previewable pages for my account change?

  4. What are some other factors?

Thanks!

How to check if a Google Books item is in the public domain without API?

I know the Google Books API, but if for whatever reason I can't access it, how do I check whether a book is in the public domain?

For whatever reason, Google doesn't think this is an information worth of the information pages or of the advanced book search.

Saving on shipment costs when buying several books

I have a list of 10 books which I would like to buy. In both Amazon.com and AbeBooks.com, when I searched for the books, the site gave me a list of books from different locations in the world, so the total price included separate shipment costs for every single book.

Is there an automatic way to optimize the shipment costs? I.e., can I tell the site: "Find me the smallest set of publishers from which I can buy all 10 books, such that the total cost of the deal is minimized"?
