How can I create a standard Blu-Ray video (not data) disc from multiple MKVs?

I have multiple video files in the MKV format. I want to turn these into a Blu-Ray disc that would play on a PS3 or PC with PowerDVD. The easier the better; I don't want to mess with bitrate and complicated settings each time if possible.

More details if it helps:

  • I create the MKV files with Handbrake usually.
  • Simple menu on the Blu-Ray would be nice.
  • My burner is a Lite-On IHBS112-29 BD+R.

Can VLC play Blu-ray films?

I just tried to play a Blu-ray disc and VLC says Your input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd://E:\'. Check the log for details.

I have a disc in the drive!

  • Will it not play because my monitor is in 4:3 view or something?
  • What can can I use to play it?
  • Any simple programs?
  • Any quality software I can use now? Or is everything paidware?

I have an LG drive on an HP computer using Windows 7.

What is the lifespan of DVD and Blu-ray discs?

Given that they are protected from light, humidity and excessive heat & cold, what is the lifespan range of DVD and Blu-ray discs?

How can I copy files from a scratched CD/DVD?

I have so far tried the following software solutions without success.

  • Windows Explorer Copy (default)
  • TeraCopy
  • Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier

Unstoppable Copier stops copying as a whole, it keeps continuing the same file after 20 minutes, despite any settings. I have spent much time Googling, but the one program ("Unstoppable Copier") that people recommended, did not to the trick as it keeps choking on the same file despite a setting of "Fasteset Data Recovery", "Maximum Retries 0" and "Undamaged Files First".

The back side of the DVD has some scratches. What options do I have? I have access to both Ubuntu and Windows 7.

Are Blu-Ray recordable disks reliable and cost-effective for backups and data storage?

I'm considering moving from DVD-Rs to Blu-Ray Recordable disks to backup my data. I don't have any experience with BD-Rs as of yet, though, and I wonder if it's worth it or I should wait another year or two.

I clearly remember that when DVDs were still the new thing you could reasonably expect a 20% coaster rate, and after one, maybe two years a lot of successfully recorded disks became totally or partially unreadable. Same thing happened years before with CD-Rs.

Considering that as of January 2012 the price of a single BD-R hovers around $2.40, and considering that I need at least 200 of them to move my data, I'm now treading lightly.

I'd appreciate to hear from someone who made the switch and can speak from experience.

As an aside, the cost per gigabyte of BD-Rs seems to be only slightly higher than DVD-Rs': $0.096 for BD-Rs (25 / $2.40) and ~$0.070 for DVD-Rs (4.3 / $0.3). The higher density of BD-Rs, in my opinion, compensates for the slightly higher price. Still, reliability comes first.

Is there an easy way to read Blu-ray discs on Windows?

Some time ago, I bought my parents a computer dedicated to media (mostly photographs and movies through DLNA). My father asked me if he could read Blu-ray discs on it, so I bought a Blu-ray reader, but I can't find a software to do the playback.

I installed PowerDVD (a free version we got with a Blu-ray disc), but it seems it now requires a (non-free) upgrade. Even if it were free, I hardly see my parents do the upgrade by themselves as they barely understand how computers work. I thought I would find a free software (something like VLC, but for Blu-ray discs), but so far I had no luck.

Is there software that would solve my issues?

It should run on Windows Vista, shouldn't require an update every monday, or at least a free one.

Covenience/Cost/Life expectancy of storage media [closed]

I may decide to pick up the battle of advocating for the use of external hard drives instead of Blu-ray discs for data backup.

External hard drive:

I can get a commercial (consumer) 1TB hard drive for about 150 bucks, and backing up consists of merely "dragging and dropping" the filesystem. The media is portable (if a bit larger) and reliable. I can have two physically separated hard drives for added redundancy (total cost: about $300).

Blu-ray

A 50GB disc costs 35 dollars in Amazon. I also need to transfer the files to the computer which has the burner, then create the images, then write them, and then store a multitude of this guys in boxes, keep a catalog, and make sure whoever takes one places it back.

Our data is critical (I guess like everyone else's).

So, if you ONLY have these two alternatives, which one would you take?

BD-ROM Drive suddenly appeared in My Computer

Today I noticed that a "BD-ROM Drive" appears in My Computer.

I do not remember installing anything that would've done that.

What could've caused this?

Where is Blu-Ray on Linux

I'm considering picking up a Blu-ray drive for a PC that will be used as my home entertainment center, but ideally, I'd like to keep a Linux based OS.

Are there currently any players in the Linux world able to decode and play Blu-ray (preferably with menus, but I know that took a while with DVDs, so it may be the same with Blu-ray).

How do I make my Blu-ray / DVD / HD-DVD drive multi-region?

I have a combined DVD / HD-DVD / Blu-ray drive on my machine (yeah, I'm very much the big man) which is all great and everything.

However, I've got quite a few region 1 DVDs that it won't play. I know I can switch my drive's region but this is limited to 5 times only.

Is there a way I can make the drive permanently multi-region or lift this limit, the same way you can with most DVD players?

Watch movies off external USB blu-ray drive

If I buy an external Blu-Ray drive, is it possible to watch blu ray movies via the drive? How much bandwidth does a connection need to stream a high-definition movie (like a blu ray movie)?

Does the drive Windows 7 calls "BD-ROM" really support Blu-Ray?

I have a drive in my machine that Windows 7 lists as a BD-ROM drive. In fact, it lists it twice, along with another DVD-RW drive, when in fact I only have one physical optical drive on my machine.

Given that there's no Blu-Ray logo on the drive itself, I'm presuming that it doesn't actually support Blu-Ray. How can I be sure? And how do I convince Windows 7 it's not a Blu-Ray drive?

is there a simple tool to determine if my combo of video card and TV is HDCP compatible?

I'm using Arcsoft TMT3 to play Blurays. It's been playing fine for a few years but all of a sudden TMT3 says that my system isn't HDCP compatible. No changes to anything in the system -- possibly a change to Win7, upgrade to SP1. The manufacturer of TMT3 thinks the issue is with the vid card driver but I'm getting the same results before and after an update to the vid card driver.

I wonder if there is a simple tool I can use to determine if my setup is HDCP compliant? That way I can determine if it's an issue with the video card or the player software.
