I'm trying to do a file system backup of a RedHat Enterprise Linux v4 server using Symantec Backup Exec 11d (Rev 7170). The backup server is Windows Server 2003.
I can browse the target server to create a selection list, and when I do a test run it completes successfully.
However, when I run a real backup, the job fails immediately during the "processing" phase with the error:
e000fe30 - A communications failure has occured.
I've tried opening ports (10000, 1025-9999), etc. But no joy. Any ideas?

I am using Symantec Backupexec 15 and trying to install agent in windows 2003 SP1 server. The installation is showing as successful, but i can see "connection is not established" in the Backupexec server console against this windows 2003 server.
1. Does BackupExcec 15 supports Windows 2003 Server?
2. If it supports, what could be the reason for the above issue.
Please help.

We're setting up K2 and it requires that several databases be snapshoted before being backed up so that they are at the exact same point in time. Can I do this and how? There are a total of 14 databases that need backed up.

I'm trying to restart the backupexec but failed. How can I avoid scanning?
BTW, i tried to restart the remote agent but the scanning still hang on that point.
Kindly seed for any expert who can help on this problem....

I need to install or use php on a windows 2003 server that already has php 5.2.0.0 installed due (I think) to setting up symantec backup exec. I don't want to interfere with backup exec's php.ini settings - and would rather be able to control my own configuration of php.
searching for php shows that php.exe and other php files are currently installed in
c:\program files\symantec\backup exec\
I'm almost certain that installing the current version of php 5.2.8 to c:\php would be disastrous or calamitous in some way.
There is no PHPRC entry in the server properties > environment variables and I'm pretty sure that the php.exe location is not included in the PATH variable. ...unless the actuall install location is different from the c:\program files\symantec\backup exec\ dir.
Any suggestions on how to proceed?

I have a backup server running fully patched Windows 2008 Std R2 with a failed installation of Backup Exec 2010 R3. I have tried to uninstall using Add/Remove Programs but this failed half way through uninstallation.
I am now in a situation where the repair/reinstall fails giving very little information (error message is "installation failed")
I have tried to remove all references to Symantec from the registry, and removed the installation files from disk. I have also removed the relevant files from C:\ProgramData\Symantec
I would like to get to a situation where I can do a clean install of the program, but every time I run the installer, it sees the previous installation.
What have I missed? This was a clean install of Windows 2008 before BE installation was attempted.
Thanks in advance

I just started as IT manager of a company that used to used an older version of backup exec that ran on a nt server. The tape drive they used also only has drivers available for up to Win 98. So i installed win 98 in a virtual enviroment and got the tape drive running. But the new versions of Backup Exec only work on the new operating systems of course. So, my choice seems to be to either find a driver for the tape drive, (T300o HP) that works on the newer operating systems, or to find a way to install the latest Backup exec on a server and see if i can access the tape drive which is currently on the 98 nmachine. I hope this makes since. I have no problem purchasing the new backup Exec. Time is a huge issue as i am trying to recover lost engineering drawings that were backed up years ago with backup exec.. that they are needing now. Sorry for the long story, but i am out of ideas. Thank you!!!!

Overall, I need to be able to run backup jobs which are already in place, but are failing whenever run, see my last thread: http://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/1edqsx/ive_been_asked_to_backup_windows_servers_using/[1]
Today, I've been trying to clean the tape drive using a cleaning cartridge which we bought. I inserted the tape, imported it, and marked it as the cleaning slot within backup exec.
Now, however, I'm running into new problems I haven't encountered. First of all, when I try to perform a clean job within Backup Exec, the job starts and makes it to 17%, at which point it returns to 10 percent . It just does this cycle over and over again, never getting above 17%.
Next, I tried inventorying the tape library. I run the job and it begins, but always freezes indefinitely at 30%.
Does anybody have an idea what might be happening, and what I might do to get it working properly?

My company is responsible for backups on a number of servers for one of our clients. The backup servers are all running Backup Exec 2010. At the end of each month we need to provide a report on how many jobs failed during the month, the reason etc. Currently our techs check a number of success/fail emails each day and record the results in a database. The monthly report then pulls the data from here.
What I am looking at doing now is automating the procedure of a human having to read the success/fail emails every day. Backup Exec allows you access to the SQL database it runs on so that is one way to go. The other would be to direct the success/fail emails to a mailbox and run a script to programatically parse the emails and get the stats that way.
Has anyone had any experience with something similar and can you offer any tips? My background is php/mysql and I will likely be using php to gather the data one way or the other. Thanks.
