audio-streaming interview questions

Top audio-streaming frequently asked interview questions

When streaming a song, in what folder does the song get saved?

When streaming a song, the song is downloaded and placed into a temporary folder on the computer, that much I know. However, while streaming the media file – mostly from Pandora – I have been searching for the song in the cache folder of Chrome and the temporary internet folders but have not found it at all.

Does anyone know where songs, streamed using Google Chrome, are temporarily downloaded to?

Note: I am well aware that permanently downloading a song that you are streaming is illegal, and I am NOT trying to do this. This question is purely for educational reasons.

Streaming RTMP mixing more sounds

I'm trying to find some software for Windows for mixing sound card output and microphone output and then sending it to the RTMP server. Is there a way to mix the two sound streams not in audio hardware card, but using some software? Thanks for attempting to answer this.

Will audio lag behind video when streaming over bluetooth?

I'm contemplating buying a bluetooth enabled speaker set for main use with my computer. What got me worried is if there is any delay when sending audio over bluetooth? For listening to music it should be fine, but even a small delay would make watching videos (or whatever else that requires video-audio sync) insufferable.

How to get best quality audio using youtube-dl?

I am using youtube-dl on Linux to download videos from YouTube and extract the audio. This is my way of building a small music collection.

Anyways, I know that there is an option --audio-quality= with 0 being best and 9 being worst. Is this all I need to do to get the best quality audio?

Also, does anyone know if downloading from soundcloud could get higher quality?

Why is VLC lagging when playing MP3 files over my LAN?

I'm using VLC 1.1.7 on Mac OS X 10.6.8 for listening to MP3s stored on my NAS, which is a QNAP device. My MacBook Pro is connected via Gigabit LAN over a Linksys WRT-610N router.

Problem:

Every file I play lags every minute or so. There's a short delay or glitch, then it continues to play. How can I get VLC to stream them correctly? Can I enable some buffer?

Things I've checked:

  • It plays local files fine without a problem
  • The network connection itself is not the issue (the NAS streams HD movies to a TV just fine)
  • It occurs on both SMB and AFP mounted shares

How do I voice-chat with my friend on PC, sharing my screen and game audio without mixing in their voice?

I consider myself a tech-savvy person, but this audio-related problem I don't know how to solve.

Imagine the following situation: You're chatting with a friend using Skype to show them what's on your game screen. They can see the picture, hear you, but can't hear the sound from your game.

In Skype's audio settings, you can set input (what your friend hears) to your PC's sound mixer output. They will then not be able to hear you, but they'll hear both the game and their own voice.

I have tried using Teamviewer and streaming applications for this purpose, but my friend hears himself in addition to terrible lags and latency.

Using separate devices is also pretty bothersome:

  • Show game and send it's audio via Skype (or any other app that can share screen) on PC;
  • Chat with friend on another device (friend can use both apps on the same PC) while combining your own audio by using a 2-input → 1 output 3.5mm audio adapter (risky business on its own);
  • Alternatively, use another voice chat app on the same PC and some configuration of virtual audio-mixers so that you can hear both the game and your friend.

There's gotta be a better way!

How do I properly configure my PC software so that I can:

  • Voice-chat with my friend;
  • Share my game's video and audio with them;
  • They won't hear themselves speaking?

Update: Today I tried a bunch of third-party apps like Virtual Audio Cable and such. They all introduce horrible noise due to how much CPU power it needs to perform fast without errors. Setting the latency to higher values fixes the noise, but duh, the latency becomes huge (~4 seconds). Either I'm not configuring any of it right, or it does require superior processing powers to perform flawlessly.

Note: I sometimes play some tunes on a midi keyboard in FL studio and I know how well my PC handles a bunch of instruments with the flawless sound at very low latency (<15ms) thanks to ASIO, so my computer is not very slow and that software shouldn't be underperforming so badly.

Update 2: ASIO and multiple sound outputs got me thinkin. I have a pretty cheap Soundblaster audio card, which has multiple input and output channels that I'm not using. Maybe I could manipulate the sound flow with an audio program? Something about sending the game's output to an unused "line out" device, grabbing it with an app and sending both to me and to an unused "line in", mix in the microphone input, which Skype would then pick up.

Update 3: After some experiments with rerouting inputs and outputs via ASIO, it turned out that Skype refuses to use any audio devices involved in such tampering.

Which lossless audio format should I use when storing them on my NAS?

I have started a project of ripping my big collection of CDs and storing them on my NAS. Since I care for audio quality I have decided to store them in a lossless format. Right now I have tried to use FLAC. However reading this article makes me having some doubt.

I have considered using Apple lossless (m4a) files. It seems that Apple will support this format for many years to come. However I have not found a way to playback them on my Playstation 3. The m4a format is supported on Mac (of course) and on Windows FLAC on the other hand is supported on all major platforms. The m4a format has the advantage of being able to import to iTunes. Today I mount my NAS and use VLC for playback (on my Mac computer).

We have a Synology NAS, a Mac Book Pro, a Sony PS3 and some Windows computers in my family. Thus I want to be able to playback the audio on all these platforms. The Synology server has the ability to transcode some formats, such as FLAC.

What lossless format do you recommend me to use for storage of my audio files on my NAS? It should be format that is playable on most platforms. It should be future-proof, but I realize that this is hard to predict what will last for many years to come.

One solution would be to keep my FLAC files. I would be able to use them as long as the FLAC format is supported. When another fantastic lossless format arrives, I will have to convert them. As long as it is a lossless format, the audio quality is preserved.

How can I play .ram audio files without installing the Real Audio Player?

I want to listen to an audio file on this BBC French language learning site.

However, the problem is that the audio file is a .ram file and from experience I don't want to install the Real Audio Player on my computer since it acts as adware, continually pops up, and is difficult to remove.

When I click on the .ram link, it asks me if I want to play it in my VLC media player, which attempts it but doesn't actually play or advance the play bar:

enter image description here

The Windows Media Player attempts to change the format then fails:

And Winamp does the same as VLC, actually opens it and pretends to play it but doesn't advance the play bar:

How can I play this .ram audio file without installing Real Audio Player?

DTS to AC3 conversion for LG TV using mediatomb DLNA server

I want to convert a MKV video file containing DTS audio to a stream with AC3 audio. I want to pass this resulting stream to mediatomb's transcoding feature. Mediatomb will transfer the stream via DLNA to a LG TV, which does not support DTS audio.

I have tried the VLC command below but the TV does not recognize the stream, and playing the destination stream on PC does not produce sound.

vlc -vvv -I dummy INPUT.file --sout \
'#transcode{acodec=ac3,ab=256k,channels=2,threads=4} \
 :std{mux=ts,access=file,dst=DEST.file}'

The following ffmpeg command give a stream that plays on the TV with sound, but the ffmpeg process gets killed (with signal 15) within 10-15 seconds, and then the TV restarts the playback from the beginning. This goes on in loops.

ffmpeg -i INPUT.file -acodec ac3 -ab 384k -vcodec copy  \
 -vbsf h264_mp4toannexb -f mpegts -y DEST.file

I want to have a working DLNA server which transcodes DTS to AC3, any help is appreciated.

Streaming audio-in via WiFi

I've a DJ Setup in one room, and a PC which has an audio-in, now I want in the same WiFi network but another room stream that audio-in with as less latency as possible. I tried shoutcast already, but that has a latency of 10 seconds and more, what is really too much. The bandwidth should be absolutely enough for this operation, but I can't find any software which would allow me to stream that sounds into another room without a big latency.
