How do I create separate zip files for each selected file/directory in 7zip?

This is the internal zip packer from Total Commander:

However I want to use my 7zip packer. When I select 5 files, I get 5 separate .zip archives for each selected file. How do I do that in 7zip?

So, I realised today I take file compression for granted. The ability to bundle a few files together into one, and have it come out smaller than any of them, is something I just accept as a fact, but how does it actually work?

I have a limited knowledge of it that includes something to do with replacing all the duplicate entries with pointers, to shrink that way, but beyond that I'm fairly clueless!

As I'm always open to new knowledge, as I imagine most of us here are, I thought I'd ask. So, SuperUser, how does compression actually work?

I’m looking for a reference of statistics on long-term storage/archive reliability for various types of media. That is, I’m looking for information, comparisons, charts, graphs, test results, etc. on how long data can reliably be stored on as many types of media as possible (e.g., floppy, tape, CD, DVD, flash-drives/memory cards, HD, SSD, device firmware/EEPROMS, heck, even punch-cards and stone tablets if they have it).

Obviously there won’t be data on things like 50-year reliability for DVDs, but presumably the data would be updated as time goes by, similar to antivirus comparison databases.

Extract a certain file from an archive with 7-Zip from the command line

If I have an archive, for example, some.zip that contains one or more files, how can I extract only one file (I know the name of the file) with 7-Zip from the command line in Windows?

How do I reassemble a zip file that has been emailed in multiple parts?

I received 3 emails each containing part of a zip file. The extensions end in .z00, .z01 and .z02. (Emailed as such to get around the typical 10Mb attachment limit per email.)

I have put all 3 files into one directory.

I can use both 7-zip and WinZip to open the first file (the .z00 file) and it lists the contents of the zip but when trying to extract the files both programs are reporting errors.

What is the least error prone way of reassembling this zip and getting to the files?

How do I password protect a .tgz file with tar in Unix?

I'm using the Unix tar command as follows to tar up a directory and its files:

tar cvzf fileToTar.tgz directoryToTar

Is there a way to password protect the .tgz file? I've created password-protected ZIP files on Windows so I would assume Unix has the same capability. Any ideas?

How do I enable multi-threaded LZMA2 using 7-zip 9.20 on the command line? I know this is normally done with the -t option like so: "-tzip" .

How do I do this with LZMA2? I tried -tlzma and -tlzma2 and neither one works. I also tried not passing -t at all, and it just runs single threaded with "lzma" mode.

Here is the command I currently have, but it is slow, and single threaded:

"C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" a -r -tzip -y XMLBackup.zip *.xml

How to crack a password protected zip file

I recently downloaded a piece of software that came in a .ZIP archive, but the .EXE software inside of the archive had a password on it. The website that I would have gotten the password from closed a while ago.

Because the executable is password protected it cannot be extracted.

I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium, and I use winrar for my archives.

So, I guess my question is is it possible to crack a password for a file within an archive without extracting it?

How to open a EAR/WAR file in windows 7

I have a few EAR/WAR files which are Java archives and I would like Windows 7 to open these files the way it opens a file with extension zip.

So I open this war file and in the list of softwares available with "Open" I see MS Word, Notepad etc but nothing about CompressedFolderView.

I also tried manually specifying the location of exe (I thought this was expand.exe) but that does not work. Does someone know if I can make this work? Or should I use Winzip or some such utilities?

Create multi volume archive on a Mac

I've got a 6 GB file, which needs to be copied to an USB-drive. The drive is 16 GB, but formatted in FAT so windows computers and Macs can read it. Fat limits the file size to 4 GB, so I cannot copy my file. My sollution would be to create a multi part archive, in two files of 3 GB.
