adapter interview questions

Top adapter frequently asked interview questions

How many port adapters, and which ones can be stacked up and actually work?

Someone posted this pic on twitter today:

lol

That won't work, right?

Why, exactly? And, specifically, at which point the stack of adapters stops working?

2.5" SSD in a 3.5" desktop drive bay normal?

I'm a little out of touch with modern desktop builds, but I recently built a new machine anyway. I want to pick up a SSD for my I/O intensive apps (EverQuest 2 and Flash CS4 mostly), but I'm having trouble finding any in the 3.5" form factor.

Is this expected, or do I fail at product search? And, if it is expected, do 2.5" SSDs come with an adapter to fit them in my desktop machine, or will I need to purchase one separately? And, finally, if I do need to purchase an adapter, are they pretty standard or are some better than others. General advice is most welcomed, though specific product recommendations in addition would be helpful!

Is serial RJ45 to USB a standard?

I can't find any resellers here in Sweden for the RJ45 to USB cable from Current Cost.

Are such RJ45 to USB cables covered by a standard so that I could buy one from another vendor?

It would also be great to know if it works in Linux / Ubuntu. It does. "Linux Kernel 2.4.31 and above already includes built-in drivers for PL-2303H, PL-2303XA/HXA and PL-2303HXD."

Physical obstacle plugging PCIe 4x into PCIe 8x

I know this has been already discussed, for example in this question, where there's even a wikipeida quote saying that it's possible.

So, according to that, I bought that PCIe 4x card. I have two PCIe 2x slots and four PCIe 8x ports. I was planning to plug it into one of the PCIe 8x.

But when I was going to plug it in, I realised the PCIe 8x ports are in the wrong direction... I mean, they're phisically "looking at" the hard drives zone, the small portion of the slot is not the closest to the peripheral side of the box.

I'm not sure I achieved to express my problem, so don't doubt to ask for clarification. Which should be the solution? Is there any kind of adapter that could solve my problem?

Here is my motherboard: old motherboard

What difference does it make whether the computer uses USB Ethernet Adapter, or a network card?

Just what the title states.

I'd like to know what difference it makes to the modem/switch, speed, power consumption whether the computer is connected by a USB Ethernet Adapter instead of a physical network card installed into a PCI slot.

As a corollary, it would be nice to know which you would recommend to a nouveau at networking.

DVI-D to VGA adapter

I know that DVI-D is digital only and can not be transformed to VGA with passive adapter. I want to know where this adapters are used? Or is it just a marketing trick?

Example of this adapter here: http://www.amazon.com/CablesToBuy-DVI-D-Male-Female-Adapter/dp/B001CHQ52W/ref=pd_bxgy_pc_img_z/183-0695115-2473620

Need to find a power adapter

Just finished upgrading the heatsink and fan in my wife's computer (dropped the temperature about 20 degrees on an AMD), and everything works great except one problem. The BIOS is reporting that it can't find the CPU fan, which it can't because the stock fan had a 4 pin connector and the new one only has a 3 pin. I'd like to find, if possible, some sort of adapter (note: not looking for an adapter to a 4 pin drive connector) that will let me plug the fan into the correct slot so the computer doesn't complain every boot. So far, I haven't been able tofind anything searching myself. Does anyone know where I can find such a beast? Thanks.

Can I use different HP power adapters in one computer?

My old HP adapter burned out and it will take 2 weeks for me to get a new one. In the meantime, I borrowed a HP cable from a friend.

Is it possible to use a different HP adapter in the mean time? The specs they have are a bit different.

Old one:

  • Input: 100-240V, 1.7A, 50-60Hz
  • Output: 18.5V, 3.5A, 65W

New one:

  • Input: 100-240V, 1.5A, 50-60Hz
  • Output: 19V, 4.74A, 90W

Can a USB/IDE/SATA adapter be flaky?

I use USB/IDE/SATA converters a lot and on the two that I have now, I sometimes get errors copying files to drives.

It only happens when I'm copying big files to the drive (big can mean as little as 100MB, I think it happens more often with bigger files - 300MB or more), and basically the copy will fail and I'll get one or more error messages about "Delayed write failed."

But if I disconnect the drive and re-connect it, I'll usually be able to continue. (The file that was being copied will be corrupt, but otherwise the drive is fine.)

I just noticed a new type of flakiness: the data transfer rate can vary widely. I copied one set of files (5x300MB files) and it took 10+minutes, then I copied another set (approx. the same sizes) and it took less than a minute.

I haven't done systematic testing, the other things I'm doing on my laptop at the same time might have some impact, and I haven't cross-checked the two adapters I have and the 3 hard drives I'm working with to see if there's a pattern. I'm more wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this.

Universal Floppy controller for USB

HI, I have an old 5.25" floppy drive and I'd like to conect it to my computer. Now, I could open the case and install the drive, of course, but I'm seeking a more convenient solution. There are numerous USB Floppy drives for the 3.5" format, so maybe there's something similar for 5.25"?

Also, since there are adapters for PATA(3.5" and 5.25") and SATA all in one device, that connect to USB, so maybe there's something similar for Floppies?

Monitor (DVI-D) to Laptop (VGA)

I am simply trying to use my DVI monitor with my laptop that only accepts VGA. I've been doing some research for an adapter from DVI female to VGA male and it seems that not only do I need an adapter, but I also need a converter, which costs around 100 dollars.

Is there another alternative? I have an LG monitor that uses DVI-D and currently has a DVI cable attached. Is it possible for me to find and use a cable that is DVI to VGA that would work with my laptop?

I have also read somewhere that sometimes the video card does the converting so people only need the adapters. I am currently using an NVIDIA Geforce GT 540M, so would just purchasing the adapter and not a converter be okay for my purpose?

Convert iMac internal LCD panel to external monitor?

My iMac died (power supply issue, out of warranty), so I took it apart to get at the HDD to recover some files. In the process, I managed to remove the LCD panel.

My question is: is it possible/does there exist an adapter that I can use to convert this panel (with an internal connector) into an external monitor that accepts a DVI input?

Micro Self-powered Gigabit splitter for wall outlet

We have a gigabit network and at each desk there is one outlet and a computer and a voip phone. The Voip phones have a 10/100 switch in them and then the computer needs to plug into the phone therefore eliminating the gigabit speeds.

Is there a small/micro device I can simply plug into the wall switch and have the ethernet power the device and then it gives me 2 gigabit ports?

I can't even find 2 port gigabit switches in my searches. I am thinking they are called something else.

Din5 plug adapter to USB

I have an old keyboard I'd like to use on recent devices (no PS2 port). But it's still on a 5 pin din plug. I tried to plug that in a Din-2-PS2 adapter and that in PS2-2-USB, but the keyboard was not recognized at all. Is there anything I have to consider here? Should it work, or is there a reason why it cannot work?

Standard SD card and Micro SD card with adapter; same speed?

I'm going to buy a new SD card to be used in my car's audio player. What I would like to know is, if I buy a micro SD card with adapter, will it provide the same read/write speed as a standard SD card of the same model? Does using adapter affect speed?
