Ubuntu: Sharing internet connection via ad-hoc

I have a laptop with Ubuntu and connected to internet through cable. I want to set up an ad-hoc network to share the internet connection via wi-fi. The other computer runs on Windows Vista.

I managed to do this in Windows 7, but I can't do it in Ubuntu.

Get list of devices on windows ad hoc network

I was wondering if there was a command to get a list of all the devices connected to an ad-hoc network that I host from my laptop.

This far I've just been looking up the device ip with ipconfig or similar from the device itself, but I want to connect a device which I can only access through SSH for a presentation I'm making.

Is there a command or utility for seeing what devices are connected to my ad-hoc netowork?

(I'm on Windows 8)

Sharing Tor network via ad-hoc

I'm using Tor for accessing sites that have been blocked by my ISP, which works great.

I use the same laptop with Windows 7 and wireless ad-hoc network to provide Internet access to other devices in direct connection.

How can I make my ad-hoc network use Tor by default?

Create a password protected computer-to-computer network

Does anyone know if it's possible to create a password protected device-to-device (adhoc) network on OS X Yosemite?

Here's a link to the Apple documentation for OS X Mountain Lion however there does not seem to be a "Require Password checkbox" option in OS X Yosemite.

https://support.apple.com/kb/PH10666?locale=en_US

EDIT:

There does not seem to be a password option when going to "menu bar --> wifi icon --> 'Create Network…'".

How can I configure my wireless to be ad-hoc command-line?

In any version of Windows, how can I put my wireless network card in ad-hoc mode through the command prompt?

I want to do this because I want to hide this from the user (ie. I don't want them to have to do by themselves) I'd rather do this using an API or native windows function, but since I found no static approach in any version of Windows, I figured that the CLI is the next best thing.

Share dial up internet with an IPod Touch

I only have dial up internet access at home. I'd like to connect to the internet on my laptop and then use that connection for my iPod through Internet Connection Sharing. I don't have a router. I'm just trying to do an Ad Hod network from WinXP to iPod. Is that possible? Is there an easier way to do this?

How to turn off an ad hoc wireless network in OS X

So I create an ad hoc network every now and then on my Mac for various reasons, and I have found lately that when I click on the Wi-Fi icon in the Mac menu bar, even when the network is not on, it still shows up under "devices" as a valid network. How do I actually shut off my network?

Sharing internet through a wireless ad-hoc in Windows 7

I'm actually requesting a workaround to share a PPoE wired Internet connection between two laptops using wireless.

I've tried sharing it the usual way... New Ad-hoc => Click turn On sharing => etc. I've tried changing all the settings I could find related to the two networks on both machines.

Conclusion: Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Is it really buggy, or are my hands growing from the wrong place? I'm almost sure I'm not the only one having this kind of problem.

What is the easiest/correct workaround ?

Ad-hoc connection between iPhone and Macbook Pro

I sometimes find it useful to connect my iPhone to my Macbook Pro by creating an ad-hoc wireless network from the MBP and connecting to that from the iPhone. However, what I find is that sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't.

When it's not working the symptoms are usually that I see the ad-hoc SSID in the list of available networks on the iPhone, can connect to it from there (including entering my WEP key), and it shows up as the wifi network in use. However I don't get the wifi symbol in the taskbar (it remains as 3G) and attempting to use the connection (e.g. trying to connect to iTunes or Keynote using their respective Remote apps) fails saying that there is so wifi connection.

I've tried rebooting both the iPhone and the MBP, recreating networks with different SSIDs and tried different channels - all to no avail!

I'm especially puzzled that (a) sometimes it works just fine first time and (b) the Settings app seems to think its all connected fine.

Is there anything else I should be trying?

Windows7: Auto start Ad-hoc hotspot if no preferred WiFi network is available

I am on Windows7 and have two different WiFi routers with two different networks at home. But sometimes both these networks are not available, in that case I want my Windows7 machine to start a hot spot on it's own and start providing the WiFi connectivity.

On Windows7. Control Panel> Network and Internet> Manage Wireless Networks I created the ad-hoc network connection which will take care of hotspot thing. I put this connection as third in order of connectivity followed by two existing WiFi networks.

The problem is... unlike two other wifi networks, this one is an ad-hoc network, Win7 does not allow it to be connected automatically (due to security reasons) in case two other networks are not available.

This is a headless (without monitor) machine. I have to have some sort of connectivity to control it via VNC or RDP, hence want this hotspot to start automatically when two others WiFi networks are not available.

How to achieve this?

How to share ethernet connection on Ubuntu (Jaunty)?

I've googled it and I've found mostly tutorials on sharing when having 2 ethernet ports. I am in a hotel with only wired connection (eth0). Remote Desktop via Ad-Hoc on Windows 7

Is there a way to connect two PCs running Windows 7 via a wifi ad-hoc network and then use Remote Desktop from one of the PCs to the other? In addition to this the Remote Desktop host PC should still be able to connect to the internet via a separate ethernet adapter, allowing the client to use the internet via the remote host screen.
