when my laptop battery is fully charged should i unplug charger and let the battery discharge? [duplicate]

Possible Duplicate:
Is it better to use a laptop on battery or on AC power?

I was wondering if when a laptop battery is full charged if one should unplug it and let the battery discharge or it can be left plugged in. I want to know because I have heard that when the battery is full and the charger stays in it actually harms the battery by killing the cells etc.

Screen losing saturation on acer Aspire 5742Z

I bought an acer Aspire 5742Z laptop (with a Intel HD 128 MB GFX card) back in May 2011 and I think I'm starting to see a problem with the screen. I first noticed it last night and again this morning. Intermittently the screen seems to lose saturation, that is the picture seems greyer/more washed out than normal. It comes and goes lasting for only ten or so seconds at a time.

Is anyone aware of any issues with the model laptop or the graphics card that might cause this?

Update I've just checked the Windows Update history and a new driver was installed on the 14/12/2011. I've rolled this driver back to see if that has any effect.

Why does my laptop shut down on its own?

My laptop shuts down.

It happened several times so far, and there is a pattern; after I leave it for an hour or so, power saving activates, and then I start using it again for 10 - 15 minutes when it shuts down with no prior warning.

I'm pretty sure that it's not an overheating issue, because I keep it in a fairly cold room, and the laptop is not hot at all after shutting down (it can get much warmer, without shutting down).

I use Windows 7 so that could be the problem, because I never had this problem while using Windows XP. The laptop is an Acer Aspire.

Do you know if there are some settings in Win 7 that can be changed to stop this?

Does anyone has any idea?

EDIT: DDR4 to DDR3

Disabling Keyboard Wakeup for Ubuntu 10.04 on Acer 1810TZ

My Acer Aspire 1810TZ laptop suspends fine but wakes up on any slight key-press. I would like to disable this behaviour. I read that it involves disabling something in the /proc/acpi/wakeup but SLPB does not seem to be listed at all.

How do I correctly apply thermal paste on a laptop CPU with a small surface area?

I watched several videos on YouTube, went through a lot of overclocking forums and websites, but I am yet to find a "correct" answer to this question.

Some agree with the "pea method" where you apply a pea-sized glob onto the center of the CPU and then mount the heat sink over it and let the pressure of the sink spread the thermal grease evenly across the surface.

Others tend to gravitate towards the "business card method" of evenly spreading a thin layer of thermal compound across the CPU surface using a business card.

And then I read something about needing to apply more thermal compound to laptop CPUs because they don't have integrated heat spreaders.

I'm confused. I own a Acer 5542G notebook with an AMD Turion II X2 M500 CPU and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 GPU. This computer has been overheating a lot lately (even playing Minecraft for a few minutes would trigger a system shutdown) and I just recently took it apart and cleaned it.

There was no dust accumulating on the fan grill, so I removed the thermal compound, cleaned the CPU surface and applied some new compound. I used the "pea method". My CPU has a rectangular surface so I applied two little pea-sized dots.

Where I used the thermal compound

After I did this, I ran CoreTemp and here's what I saw (idling temperatures): CPU running super hot!

That's a lot of heat! I'm guessing I screwed with my application of the thermal paste. I'm hoping anyone who owns an Aspire 5542G or a computer with an AMD Turion X2 M500 processor that has experienced the same problem could help me out here. Thank you.

Laptop turning off when fan is spinning hard

My laptop seems to have reach its lifespan. Its an Acer laptop so I guess that's normal. But I'd like to hear your opinions about this.

My laptop is only 2 years old. I haven't heard the fan spinning like crazy not until these past 5 months.

What I did:

  • Hoping that its just the applications that I have installed that's consume the life of my laptop from the background. I used PC Decrapifier to uninstall some of the things that I don't need.
  • Reformatted my computer but only the primary partition since my files are on the second partition.
  • Bought a cooling pad.

None of these works.

I noticed the fan spins so hard when:

  • I have a lot of browser tabs open.
  • Full screen mode a flash video that I'm viewing online.
  • Using VLC to watch encoded videos. There's this thing called minicoder http://sourceforge.net/projects/minicoder/ to reduce the size of videos without affecting much of the quality. I'm suspecting that it needs additional software(to make life easier for the hardware) even though the video is working fine in VLC. VLC consumes about 300,000K and above(as seen from task manager) while watching videos (.mkv).

The problem:

  • Laptop suddenly turns off when the fan spins like crazy for about 20 minutes. I'm always checking to see if its already too hot(using my fingers to feel the side of the laptop) but its not so I continued watching and then poof! computer turns off.

  • Laptop won't turn on immediately when I turn it on after it turning off by itself. The light for the power goes on but its turns off immediately. I have to wait for about 10-20 seconds before it boots up without problems.

So how do I go about this? Is this just normal for Acer laptops after about 2 years of heavy usage (8-12 hours a day)? My usage is heavy but I normally only have a text-editor(sublime) and browser open(chrome).

Here's what I got from HW monitor:
