I'm currently running Windows 8.1 x64 (a problem in itself that I can't change sadly ;-P) with the latest version of VirtualBox (4.3.18 r96516). I managed to get the server version up and running with no issues but I cannot get the desktop version running.
I can boot to the menu and start the process (select the option to install and/or try) and it will get through the inital Ubuntu 14.10 loading screen (with the progess "bar/dots") but then we get to a nasty screen of distorted colors and that's it.
My hypothesis is that the display driver/server isn't working with VirtualBox and what I'm essentially seeing is the display in a crappy mode (16colors@62x24) because I am able to see a perfectly fine screen with cursor working and everything and then suddenly I'm in that nasty screen. The mouse does show up (nasty looking and filling the entire screen) but nothing else.

I need to connect to a L2TP IPsec VPN using Ubuntu 14.10. I previously used L2TP IPsec VPN Manager 1.0.9 from Werner Jaeger in Ubuntu 14.04, and it worked great, but that no longer appears to be supported in 14.10. I have xl2tpd installed. I no longer see the option to add a L2TP Ipsec VPN connection under the VPN Connections menu in Network Connections. Any help or guidance is appreciated.

After the 14.10 update to VirtualBox, I can no longer run my boxes. Of note, running sudo service virtualbox status returns VirtualBox kernel module is not loaded and running sudo service virtualbox restart shows:

* No suitable module for running kernel found

The VirtualBox GUI, when I try to run a box, pops up a dialog saying that I should run sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup, but there is no /etc/init.d/vboxdrv on my 14.10 installation.
This is reminiscent of this question. Per some of the answers, I tried uninstalling (with purge) and reinstalling VirtualBox. This did not help. However, I was unable to install:
linux-headers-`uname -r`
because there is no package named linux-headers-3.13.0-30-generic. I do have linux-headers-generic and linux-source installed, as well as dkms, but the reinstall still fails:

I am currently using Ubuntu 14.10. Steam is showing up in the Ubuntu Software Center, but when I click on it it says:
Not found
There isn't a software package called "steam" in your current software sources.
Is there a fix for this? Am I the only one having this problem?

When ever kidle_inject starts running on my system the load shoots up in general it only gets to a load of around this 5.23, 3.65, 2.54 but a lot of the time it jumps up past the 15 mark on each of them at that point the system grinds to a halt and I have to power it off.
This only happens when the kidle_inject process starts. How can I disable this process so my machine can work and I can get some work done.

I am running Ubuntu 14.10 and I am trying to get the latest version of Adobe Flash Player for Linux (which apparently is 11.2), I am selecting the option for APT for Ubuntu 10.04+ here:
But when I click the Launch Application button after hitting the Download button:
I just get this in the Ubuntu Software Center:
So my main questions are, why is this happening? Can I fix this? And how can I get the latest version of Adobe Flash Player if I can't fix this?

Previously, I was trying to figure out how to install the L2TP/IPSEC manager code. I guess Ubuntu/Canonical switched away from OpenSwan to StrongSwan, but didn't really announce it. So that was figured out in this AskUbuntu question: L2TP IPsec VPN client on Ubuntu 14.10
Since then, I've been trying to figure out how to use Pre-Shared Keys for Authentication to the Server. As shown in the screenshot, the Network Manager allows for a Certificate (.pem file), but not a Pre-shared key.
My network admin doesn't want to mess around with Certs because PSKs are good enough for the situation we're working with. I've already tested these PSKs with Windows and they work great.
He's given me 4 pieces of info.
- Server name
- PSK for said server
- User name
- password for said username
I can see on this screenshot where to put the server name and username, but cannot see where to put the PSK for the server, nor where to enter the password (maybe I'm prompted for that at connection time.)
Anyone know how to do this?
UPDATE: So I tried hackerb9's suggestion, but it didn't appear to do anything. I also tried alci's suggestion of downloading the 1.3.1 version of Network-Manager for L2TP and compiling manually. After installing a bunch of packages and re-running ./configure a few times, I eventually was able to "make" and then "make install" the code.
The plug-in for network manager now shows a Pre-shared Key option, but it still doesn't work. It now looks like this:
The problem with this is that the "Certificate" option is still being displayed (instaed of the Pre-shared key field.)
Where in this Ubuntu Network Manager plugin am I supposed to enter the Pre-shared Key for Server authentication?

I have Ubuntu 14.10 with WinUSB and I have a Windows 8.1 Pro ISO with a 4GB SD Card with an empty FAT32 partition. Everytime I try to use it, it says "Installation failed, exit code: 256". How do I fix this?

My Ubuntu version is new, and Intel Graphics Installer doesn't allow me to install the Intel video drivers. It says "Distribution not supported"

After the last update, when I run video on a full screen(youtube, facebook video...) the cursor disappears, and the video works well. But when I close the video(with esc) the whole system freezes and I use RESUIB command to restart it. This happened after last chrome update. I use ubuntu 14.10, intel graphics 4000 and stock drivers, because there are no intel drivers for 14.10 yet. This happens aproximatily every second time I run full screen. Any ideas? Thanks!

This question is about Ubuntu 14.10 on my developer laptop.
I've got a folder in /tmp that is used by an application to put temporary stuff in there. This application usually makes a temporary folder in my homedir and deletes it afterwards. For some reason that doesn't work when the homedir is encrypted. So instead, I made a symlink to /tmp/foo inside my homedir. My application can write there and make it's temporary subfolder.
Now /tmp/foo gets deleted every time I reboot my machine. Until now I've just recreated the folder manually after reboot. Now I learned in How is the /tmp directory cleaned up? that there is a job doing that.
I've looked at /etc/init/mounted-tmp.conf but my bashfu and especially my findfu are not sufficient to do what I want. Here's an excerpt from that file:
